Paranormal Activity 2

Movie Review by Keith Kelly

I have mixed feelings about Paranormal Activity 2. While I felt it was an effectively creepy low budget film, it too closely mimicked the spooky original. Way too closely. It’s got the same basic set-up-a family’s house is possibly haunted. Video cameras are set up to try and capture whatever is making things go bump in the night. Next-skepticism from the husband-terror from the wife. Then, things get worse; then worse still.

Except for a larger extended family (and a dog), and a direct tie-in to events and characters from the first film, it’s almost a beat-by-beat recreation. Still, it does a great job at offering up minimalist scares without any thumping soundtrack, rapid cut pacing or million dollar special effects-just good old-fashioned frights. I only wish it had added a little something more unique to the mix to make the mayhem more unpredictably shocking. Worth seeing in a theatre for the communal fright factor, but it might possibly be even scarier to watch at home, alone, in a creaky house.

I give “Paranormal Activity 2” directed by Tod Williams and starring a cast of virtual unknowns, a grade of “B”. I’m Keith Kelly.
